A Time Before Texas...and Beyond

A Time Before Texas...and Beyond

In May 2026, three rural Texas libraries will come together to host “A Time Before Texas….and Beyond”. From the Texas Paleoindians of the Ice Age (16,000 -10,000 years ago), sabertoothed cats, mammoths, and giant sloths, to the disappearance of the Jumano Indians (1582-1799), who roamed the Edwards Plateau region of Texas and beyond. This exhibit will be hosted by the Crockett County Public Library (Ozona), the Schleicher County Public Library (Eldorado), and the Sutton County Public Library (Sonora), free of charge for all ages. Guest speakers are Dr. Thomas Shiller, a geologist from Sul Ross University, and Thomas Ashmore, president of the West Texas Archeological Society and a resident expert on Jumano Indian history. Attendees will learn about the geology, paleontology, flora, fauna, people, and archeology of the Texas Ice Age and beyond that make up this region of the Edwards Plateau. Pictograph stories left behind by the Jumano Indians, who came after the Ice Age, will tell of the lands they roamed and hunted in our counties, including a visit from the “Lady in Blue.” This event, geared towards grades 3rd and up, will be the same at all three libraries. The mornings are for students attending public, private, or homeschooled, and their chaperones from the host town and surrounding communities. The evening events are open to the public from all communities. Schools may choose a library that works best with their schedule/distance traveling, the same for community members. We kindly ask that you contact your preferred library to give a headcount for seating purposes in advance of the event.
